Solutions: Injection Moulding

Injection moulding is one of the most widely used production methods for plastic parts and is a cornerstone of Alcami’s production capabilities. Injection moulding involves injecting a heated material into a pattern, called a mould, which then cools into a single-piece part that is high-quality, strong, and replicable.

A diverse range of plastic materials can be used in injection moulding to create parts across many different industries:

  • Plastic packaging
  • Food & beverages
  • Consumer electronics
  • Medical sector

Injection moulding is highly repeatable, which makes it great for brand consistency and part reliability. This also makes injection moulding extremely efficient and cost-effective for high volume production.

How it works

At Alcami we can advise you through every step of your production process. If you choose injection moulding for your project, there are a few stages of production that we will guide you through:

  1. An engineer designs a CAD model for the part.
  2. From the model a mould will be fabricated that can be used to accurately form your desired part. Alcami engineers can assist with the design and creation of your mould.
  3. Once a proper mould has been developed and tested for quality, manufacturing can begin for as many parts as your job requires.

Alcami engineers are available to assist in realizing any of your project ideas. We offer expert design consultation and a variety of mould fabrication options, providing you with a turnkey solution for all your production needs.

A single cycle of the injection moulding process for each part also has several steps:

  1. First, the mould closes. The only opening in the outside of the mould is where your heated material is injected into the mould.
  2. Next is the injection of melted plastic or other material into the mould.
  3. When the mould is filled, injection stops and the mould is given time to cool based on part thickness and material type.
  4. While the part cools, the injection mechanism reloads to prepare for the next part.
  5. Once the part is cooled, the mould opens and ejector pins push the finished part out of the mould.

Alcami is an ISO 9001 certified company and provides cleanroom production for this manufacturing process to ensure maximum quality products and optimal sanitation standards. Be sure to contact us to learn more about how we can help you meet your unique production requirements.

Benefits of Injection Molding

Excellent for Mass Production
The replicability of injection moulding means that it is an excellent way to manufacture identical parts in high volumes. The largest costs incurred are during the beginning stages of production when designing and fabricating your mould. After this, the cost per part produced is very low. This makes injection moulding ideal for…

  • Manufacturing precision product packaging
  • Plastic cases for a variety of electronics

Low Scrap Rates
The injection moulding process is a highly sustainable process, which results in very little post-production scrap. Even the small amount of leftover plastic from injection moulding can typically be reground and recycled in future processes.  As an ISO 14001 certified company, Alcami is dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting sustainability and efficiency throughout all its production processes.

Detailed Design Capabilities
The injection moulding process creates single-piece parts of a uniform material, which gives them considerable strength and high levels of product consistency. This allows a high level of detail to be imprinted on parts, which have exceptional color control and an attractive finish immediately upon ejection. This makes injection moulding ideal for

  • Reliable and effective product packaging
  • Sturdy medical sector products
  • Aesthetic electronics casings
