CNC Machining | Best Computer Numerical Control

Solutions: CNC Machining

As one of the most widely used digital manufacturing technologies, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining is an important part of Alcami’s arsenal of manufacturing instruments.  CNC machines produce parts using information taken directly from a CAD file and have automated operation that requires low levels of supervision.

CNC machines can use nearly any solid material, from a variety of metals and plastics to composites, foam, or wood. This gives it a wide range of applications:

  • Consumer electronics
  • Medical Sector
  • Food Industries
  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Tooling
  • Custom Parts & Prototypes

In addition, CNC machining delivers precision parts with high accuracy and tight tolerances, which are very price competitive in small-to-medium sized volumes.

Alcami utilizes CNC machining technology in combination with our many other manufacturing techniques giving you a turnkey solution for all your production needs.

How it works

At Alcami we can advise you through every step of your production process. If you choose CNC machining for your project, there are three main steps that we will guide you through:

  1. An engineer designs a CAD model for the part.
  2. A CAM engineer converts the CAD file into a CNC program and sets up the CNC machine for production.
  3. The CNC machine executes the program and performs all the machine operations to remove material and create the desired part.

Alcami engineers are available to assist in realizing any of your design ideas. We are also able to provide expert advice on how CNC machining can be combined with other manufacturing methods to yield the highest quality product possible.

Benefits of CNC machining with Alcami

Excellent Material Properties
A benefit to subtractive processes like CNC machining is that resulting parts have excellent material properties. The physical properties of a machined part are identical to the starting material, allowing engineers to select an ideal material for their application which will retain properties during manufacturing.

This makes CNC ideal for

  • High-precision prototypes
  • Small series special parts
  • Medium and large series production parts with special requirements

Automated
The CNC machining process is fully automated, so only minimal human oversight is required. In addition, it does not require specialized tooling for new projects, making it a highly cost-effective production method.

High Accuracy, Precision Parts
CNC machining is an ideal technology to use for manufacturing parts with high precision and unmatched accuracy. If you’re looking for a way to make a small batch of custom parts or a high-quality prototype, CNC machining is an excellent approach for your project.

This makes CNC machining excellent for…

  • Tooling and creating molds for other manufacturing processes
  • Unique, custom parts

FAQ

What is the CNC machining process like at Alcami?

At Alcami we will guide you through three main steps of any CNC machining process:

  1. An engineer designs a CAD model for the part.
  2. A CAM engineer converts the CAD file into a CNC program and sets up the CNC machine for production.
  3. The CNC machine executes the program and performs all the machine operations to remove material and create the desired part.

Alcami can help provide you with engineering assistance to bring to life your design ideas or provide the knowledge and expertise to counsel your internal engineers on creating operable designs for Alcami machines.

Alcami engineers are available to assist in realizing any of your design ideas. We are also able to provide expert advice on how CNC machining can be combined with other manufacturing methods to yield the highest quality product possible.

Are there any design restrictions to keep in mind when using CNC machining?

When considering CNC machining, it is  important to keep in mind the design restrictions present in this form of subtractive manufacturing.  Parts with complex geometries could have increased cost if they require a multi-axis CNC machining system or manual adjustments made by the machinist.

Additionally, because the starting material block must be held in place while being machined, some designs may not be feasible with available cutting tools. For example, it may not be possible for a CNC machine to reach areas necessary for cutting out internal geometries or deep undercutting.

Reach out to Alcami’s engineering team if you need assistance in developing viable designs for your CNC machined project or in selecting an ideal manufacturing method for your existing designs.

What tolerances and dimensions are used for CNC machining at Alcami?

One of the greatest advantages of CNC machining is that it can produce parts with very tight tolerances. It is important to consider your material and part geometry to calculate the correct tolerance and ensure high quality in all your parts.

Alcami’s engineering team is happy to provide further discussion and expert recommendations on the best design approach for your CNC machined parts.

What types of CNC machining are available at Alcami?

Alcami uses 3-axis CNC machines. The part being milled remains in the same position, while various cutting tools move along the x, y, and z axes.

This type of CNC machine is most commonly used for mechanical parts, and is best for:

  • Cutting sharp edges
  • Milling slots
  • Drilling holes

What materials can be CNC machined at Alcami?

Nearly any solid material can be CNC machined. In addition to machining many varieties of metals and plastics, CNC machining can also be used to create parts out of composites, foam, or wood.

Alcami most frequently uses the following materials in its projects.

  • Aluminium alloys
  • Stainless steel
  • ABS
  • Delrin
  • Nylon
  • Polycarbonate

If you are interested in other materials for your CNC machined project, our engineering team can help you look at options, design strategies and recommendations to give you the highest quality product possible.

What are the main applications of CNC machining?

The wide variety of tools and materials that can be used in CNC machining make this process extremely versatile and useful for a wide variety of applications:

  • Consumer electronics – CNC machining is great for the small, complex parts needed in electronics manufacturing.
  • Medical – CNC machining is incredibly useful in creating customized, precision parts and is able to work with medically safe materials.
  • Food – From parts needed in industrial preparation to creating packing and distribution materials, CNC machining has a wide range of uses in food production.
  • Tooling – In addition to production applications, CNC machining can also be used to create tools and molds for use in other manufacturing processes.
  • Custom Parts & Prototypes – CNC machining is a high-accuracy, economically viable choice for one-off custom parts and prototypes that does not require any special tooling.
